[Open Day] READY FOR GRADE 1: Preparing Your Child for a Confident Start

22 October, 2026

Starting Grade 1 is an important milestone in every child’s journey of growth. It marks the beginning of a new learning environment, new challenges, and the gradual development of independence. But how can parents tell if their child is truly ready? Beyond reading, writing, and early math skills, what other abilities should parents look for to better understand how their child learns, interacts, and adapts?

The READY FOR GRADE 1 Open Day at The Olympia Schools is designed to help parents explore these questions through hands-on learning experiences. It offers an opportunity to observe how children explore, learn, and respond to new situations in a real classroom environment.

We warmly invite parents and children born in 2021 to join us for this experiential day, discover Olympia’s primary school environment, and learn about the essential foundations that will help children confidently begin Grade 1 in the 2027–2028 academic year.

  • Time: 8:30 AM, Saturday, October 31, 2026
  • Venue: The Olympia Schools, Trung Van Urban Area, Hanoi, Vietnam
  • Participants: Parents and children born in 2021

Places are limited to ensure a meaningful, high-quality classroom experience for every participating family.

What Makes READY FOR GRADE 1 Special?

Rather than simply touring the school or listening to an introduction to its educational programs, parents can observe their children taking part in learning activities firsthand. This allows them to better understand how their children process information, interact with peers, and respond to new challenges.

1. Hands-on Learning Through Exploration

Children take part in a variety of age-appropriate learning activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and foster independence.

Examples of learning experiences include:

  • Amazing Animals – Discovering the Animal Kingdom Through English: Children explore English through music, movement, animal recognition games, and creative headband-making activities, developing their listening comprehension and communication skills.

  • The Secrets of the Wind – Discovering Science Through Observation and Experimentation: Children explore the concept of wind, make their own pinwheels, and develop their observation and questioning skills.

Each activity offers parents an opportunity to observe how their children follow instructions, make choices, take on new challenges, and express their ideas.

These activities are illustrative examples of the program. The specific activities and group arrangements will be determined by the school based on the number of participants on the day.

2. Understanding How Your Child Learns

Following the activities, parents will join a discussion with Olympia’s School Leadership Team to explore the educational principles behind the experiences they have observed.

The discussion will address practical questions: What abilities indicate that a child is ready for Grade 1? Why is learning through exploration and hands-on experiences important? How can parents nurture independence, critical thinking, and initiative in their children?

Drawing on real classroom experiences, parents will gain a broader understanding of school readiness—not simply in terms of what children already know, but also how they learn, interact, and gradually take ownership of their learning.

3. Discovering the Learning Environment at Olympia

Parents and children will explore Olympia’s learning spaces and discover how the school creates an environment that encourages children to explore, interact, and develop essential skills.

Why Join READY FOR GRADE 1?

Through this experiential day, parents will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand their child through direct observation: Recognize how their child listens, concentrates, interacts, and responds to new challenges.

  • Gain a broader understanding of Grade 1 readiness: Explore the essential abilities children need beyond reading, writing, and math.

  • Discover Olympia’s educational approach: Learn how the school designs learning experiences to develop critical thinking, independence, and self-directed learning.

  • Make more informed decisions about their child’s education: Connect directly with the School Leadership Team, learn about student readiness assessments where applicable, and explore the next steps in the admissions journey.

By observing their children in a real learning environment, parents can better understand their starting points and discover how to support them throughout the next stage of their educational journey.

The Olympia Schools warmly invites parents and children to join the READY FOR GRADE 1 Open Day to experience a day of learning at Olympia, discover how their children learn, and build a strong foundation for a confident start to Grade 1.
