TOK | IB - DP: Olympians enhance critical thinking through TOK
10 January, 2024
In the early terms of the 2024-2025 academic year, Olympians from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program IB-DP were introduced to the subject of TOK (Theory of Knowledge). They started to be acquainted with concepts, essences, and various approaches to formulating an opinion, thus developing skills in assessing issues from diverse perspectives. After this term, each Olympian completed a presentation on a philosophical question. The results of these presentations contribute to their final assessment.
Each Olympian applied theories related to ways of evaluation, validation, and understanding the knowledge they had acquired to connect in real-life situations. They addressed abstract questions such as:
- “What is the role of imagination in exploring knowledge?”
- “What leads to the differences in each person's perception?”
- “The relationship between emotions and evaluating the value of a work of art?” Some shared insights on the spiritual value of Feng Shui bracelets in Vietnamese customs to convince that "cultural differences lead to different perceptions among individuals, ethnic groups, and nations." Others brought the story of the Mona Lisa painting to argue that "Art is the language of emotions that are difficult to express, difficult to convey, and not everyone can comprehend."
"Unlike conventional subjects, the focus of TOK is not just memorizing learned knowledge but also requires learners to develop critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and practical reasoning. The construction of learning and assessment forms, through debates, discussions, and reflecting activities has enhanced our critical thinking skills and application of the learned theory," shared Olympian Dang Khanh Linh (11DP).
The outcome after days of contemplation by Olympians is the "shower" of praise from their TOK teacher, Ms. Gamira (MA English and Social Sciences), along with outstanding scores. These absolute scores not only testify to Olympians' hard-working but also critical thinking skills. This profound thinking foundation will be an essential asset for them to confidently face challenges and conquer big dreams in the future.
