As a determined and persistent student during the whole application journey, Dong Ha Thu has harvested many fruitful results for her efforts.

As of now, Dong Ha Thu has received offer letters from five colleges in Canada and the US. She said that one or two colleges are pending, but she has made her mind on which will be her destination.

“I got the offer letter from University of Toronto (Canada), Boston College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Wisconsin and Binghamton University (USA). I still got 1-2 pending but mostly likely I will join University of Toronto.”

Ha Thu submitted an essay on feminism and makeup to the American colleges

Ha Thu got a CAD 50,000 scholarship at University of Toronto for the first year. This is a top scholarship from one of the best Canadian colleges. Boston College is ranked 42nd among colleges in the US while University of Massachusetts Amherst offered her USD 12,000/year, the highest scholarship for international students.

Regarding major, Ha Thu chose Economics across all applications. The Olympian student said that economics is a diverse field that opens up many career choices. Ha Thu is also keen on an dynamic economic mindset and how to apply economics into life.

Application into American colleges requires an essay on top of academic and extracurricular record (2 essays from University of Wisconsin). Having contemplated the topic of feminism since grade 11, Ha Thu has put a lot of efforts into her essays.

“I look at feminism from the daily life perspective that one female student experiences. People have a habit of comparing females and males and assume that females are inferior to their counterpart. I myself have a good academic performance in natural science subjects, which are considered male subjects. The insights into feminism or the role of women in the society break my shyness and inferiority to make me become stronger.”

In the second essay for University of Wisconsin, Ha Thu shared an interesting viewpoint about the correlation between economics and arts. She shared how economics theories can be applied into arts, including makeup, i.e. how makeup is associated with economics and her own identity. A specific tone of makeup cushion can deliver a different message, for example red as intense, purple as mysterious. And the blending of these tones is an affirmation about her identity..

Besides two excellent essays, she has a strong academic and extracurricular record. IELTS 7.0, 3.89 GPA, and many extracurricular activities including debate, dancing, Deputy Head of Organizing Board, Head of Logistics Board, etc. have made her application outstanding.

“I am happy as my efforts have brought about positive results. I believe that any success comes from efforts and luck. At this moment, maybe I am a bit luckier than others.

Based on my experience, I think you need strong GPA, high IELTS and extracurricular activities in your application. Do not hesitate to try on different experiences to show that you are adaptive and willing to conquer any challenge in any new environment.

I have prepared for my application since mid-grade 11. The biggest challenge is the essay idea. A successful essay must reflect the writer’s self as all colleges are interested in who you are. Many go astray and focus on their surroundings but not themselves. The essay must show that you might not be perfect but you have your own strengths and you are willing to improve your weaknesses during college. They want to see which kind of person you are changed into.”

Hà Thu cũng đã bắt đầu tìm hiểu về việc học ở Canada và những chuẩn bị cho việc du học.

“Em lựa chọn học tại Toronto vì thấy Mỹ khá biến động nhiều nên cũng hơi lo lắng. Toronto sẽ có nhiều cơ hội và cho phép sinh viên thực tập ngoài các công ty và đi làm thêm; điều đó con thích hơn ở Mỹ. Cuộc sống Canada chắc cũng sẽ yên bình ở Mỹ còn chất lượng giáo dục của Canada cũng không thua kém gì Mỹ. Em cũng có một chút lo lắng về tình hình dịch bệnh nhưng chắc chắn mọi thứ sẽ ổn thôi.

Hơi tiếc vì cuối cùng, em không lựa chọn học tại Mỹ khi đã đầu tư khá nhiều thời gian và công sức cho các bài luận. Nhưng em tin rằng có những quyết định nằm ngoài lựa chọn của bản thân và biết đâu nó sẽ mở ra nhiều cơ hội mới.”
