Olympians grade 9 harnessed their startup skills in interdisciplinary english - economics
11 April, 2024
Inspired by the reality TV show Shark Tank, the interdisciplinary project between English and Economics has given Olympians in grade 9 the opportunity to challenge their creativity, understanding of socio-economic realities, and demonstrate their own abilities. Participating in this playground, students have been working in groups to build a business plan that can solve real-life problems, and then convince investors to invest in their projects.
"In the 3 months of implementing the project, we had to research the general market to choose the products we wanted to sell. Continuing to research that niche market in more depth, we came up with detailed ideas and then built a holistic HR, finance, product marketing plan... This process was a great experience, which gave me many valuable lessons and memories. It helped me understand more about business models, about the current real market, how to develop a project and improve my research, planning, teamwork skills, and specific English skills...," shared Grade 9 Olympian Nguyen Bao Linh.
As a member of one of the 6 best teams that made it to the final, Bao Linh said that she and her friends were very excited when in this round 2/3 of the Sharks were outside guests - the first time they had been exposed to the project. With only 7 minutes to present their plans, the teams did their best to ensure that their short presentations could fully and clearly explain their business projects. "The new questions and perspectives of the Sharks gave us a lot of ideas to improve our business plan even further," Bao Linh shared.
As one of the 3 "Sharks" of the final, Mr. Christopher Morley - Trade and Investment Counselor of the Australian Embassy - had many compliments when talking about "the great and inspiring ideas" of the Olympians. According to him, the combination of teaching English and Economics through a startup project model like Shark Tank is "very good", helping students apply their knowledge in practice and prepare many skills for the future of global integration.
